That's very much the exception rather than the rule, though. However there are some other examples of relatively lo fi games doing far better than this. And most far worse. In the end it's mostly about the game, though graphics certainly help a ton.Christopher M. While I have no dream of selling in masses, I am still interested in what kind of numbers one could potentially sell with a good game and low-end graphics, since it is going to consume all my time anyway. I was reading the post down til the end and right in the middle of me hectically searching for sale numbers you sent me back to the same place I was when beginning the project. Having no better answer to my original question, and being the guy you refered to that does it for the process of doing it, I guess i have no choice anyway, now do I. This is a sign that Indie Games have been making money. Also in the PC side, because there are a lot of indie developers that they like steam and they have been working to include steamwork functionalities in their titles. Even some of them have expressed that they like to work better for Steam than Microsoft like: Team Meat and Introvision (Darwinia developers).Joelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08210046852516189033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439941893980599296.post-62160283456332872472010-04-28T22:11:18.849-04:002010-04-28T22:11:18.849-04:00Thanks Chris. Good to hear from you, and thanks for...Hey Tankor,

Good to hear from you, and thanks for the support. I am sure our actual revenue is lower than the math you were projecting, because a) a goodly number of our units sold were on discount promotions, and b) we get varying royalty rates, but it's still a good number. Enough that we aren't at imminent risk of going under or anything, but not so much that we can dawdle on our next projects. ;)

My stance on NDAs is that they are sensible. Arcen has NDAs with all of our staff, and when it comes to financials and so forth that's something I weigh very carefully when talking about. Now that we are more successful as a company I can more easily talk about lower sales numbers from the past, but in the past I never would have talked about that because it's too easy to take out of context and for players to thus assume a game was a flop. So it's always a volatile thing, and a topic that needs to be handled with care for any company.

When it comes to partner NDAs, those also tend to make sense because various distributors are trying to maintain competitive advantages against one another. They don't want each other knowing deal terms, technical details of their systems, and other such things that any developer using their platform has access to. For the same reason that one developer doesn't want another poking through their code, generally speaking. Of course I tend to share the most interesting parts of my own code, so I guess I'm one to talk on that, but so it goes. ;)

I definitely know you never heard me say I hate writing, that's been a passion of mine almost as long as video games have been, and I've never said anything different. What you may remember is that I said something along the lines of that I prefer making video games because my talents lie more along that route, and because writing fiction is about the hardest thing I ever do. So writing is definitely not something I want to do as a day job, ever, because it's like pulling teeth to get it done. So I can see why you'd get the impression I dislike writing! But in actuality, I love it despite its intense difficulty. I just could never do it all day, every day.

Thanks for the note, and good to hear from you!Christopher M. Parkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16719365007524426389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439941893980599296.post-28461526816845922532010-03-13T20:17:21.492-05:002010-03-13T20:17:21.492-05:00I can't believe it, I just did some quick math...I can't believe it, I just did some quick math on those sales numbers you posted. Man, you've done great work, it's awesome to know that you are being rewarded with the money, fame and the knowing that you and your small team have made such a great thing.

Also, what's it like with all the NDAs you must be dealing with these days? What's your stance on that? I've always had a love/hate for the secrecy that dev companies need to employ to make sure that their game gets the best reception possible. I think in a perfect world, I'd like to try to make a 100% transparent company.

Hehe, don't I remember your saying something about how you disliked writing? It has been awhile.

Anyways, I'll keep reading so long as you keep writing!
Cheers, TankorAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439941893980599296.post-13618350751706916262010-03-11T23:20:59.161-05:002010-03-11T23:20:59.161-05:00It's definitely good to have realistic expecta...It's definitely good to have realistic expectations, I think. That way instead of reality being crushing when it hits, you know what to expect and can adapt and grow accordingly. It's very possible to do very well financially in this industry, but it almost never happens overnight, as people tend to imagine. Best of luck with your project!Christopher M.
